Phase Oriented Treatment of Trauma: EMDR and Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

THE SENSORIMOTOR PSYCHOTHERAPY INSTITUTE
“TRAINING for the TREATMENT OF TRAUMA: Part I”

Abstract

Traditional psychotherapy addresses the cognitive and emotional elements of trauma, but lacks techniques that work directly with the physiological elements, despite the fact that trauma profoundly affect the body and many symptoms of traumatized individuals are somatically driven.

The Sensorimotor Psychotherapy Institute is an educational organization dedicated to the study and teaching of a body oriented approach to clinical psychotherapy practice. Sensorimotor Psychotherapy based on contemporary research in neuroscience, attachment and trauma theory, integrates both cognitive and somatic methods in the treatment of trauma, attachment, and developmental issues. In this 108 hour course, participants will learn the theoretical model and necessary skills to work with trauma using Sensorimotor Psychotherapy.

Attachment and developmental elements of the trauma survivor’s experience will be differentiated from the traumatic and somatic aspects, and participants will explore how to work somatically with each element and how to address their inevitable intertwining.
